Dahlia Painting by Tessa Newcomb B. 1955, 2001 Additional information: Medium: Oil on card Dimensions: 14.9 x 21 cm 5 7/8 x 8 1/4 in Signed with initials; signed, dated and titled verso. Born in Suffolk in 1955, Tessa Newcomb is the daughter of the artist Mary Newcomb. She attended the Norwich School of Art from 1972 and received a BA (Hons) in Fine Art from Bath Academy of Art in 1976. In 1977 she attended a course on printmaking at the Wimbledon School of Art. Newcomb’s first solo exhibition was held at the Annexe Gallery, Wimbledon in 1979. She has works in public collections including the Bradford Metropolitan Museum and the Whitworth Art Gallery. The Suffolk countryside and country events feature predominantly in Newcomb’s paintings. She also produced jacket illustrations for Julia Blackburn’s Daisy in the Desert and the paperback edition of The Emperor’s East Island. Tessa Newcomb’s paintings record the world immediately around her, the garden, the greenhouse, the allotment; she draws you into her work, it feels intimate, you could be a local peering over the fence. “I like painting allotments because they are full of the curiously diverse kind of happenings I usually paint but they are also a focus for an amazing array of abstract shapes, colours and textures.”

"In creating my paintings, I draw on my experience as a former commercial art director and designer," says artist Pat Doherty. "I take time to balance the elements in my compositions and establish good color relationships between light and shadow."


    About the Artist
    Pat Doherty follows in the tradition of Bay Area artists who paint what they love. Her culinary series is a reflection of her surroundings; Pat is a third generation San Franciscan now living in Marin. The Bay Area is the perfect place to find the petit fours and decadent pastries featured in her work "Sweet Choices." Similar in subject matter to Wayne Theibaud's desserts, Pat’s unique style starts with a rich color palette and an angled picture plane to achieve depth. The subjects are often simple, but Pat takes the time to understand them and develop a mastery of light and shadow. The art has a certain humor and light-heartedness as well, especially with her series of dogs and bite-sized confections. Pat's style is inspired by her previous work in the graphic design industry, when she was the art director of the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce, art director of San Francisco magazine, and senior art director at a private design firm. Pat's work has been featured in American Art Collector magazine, several solo shows, including the Caffe Museo in the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, as well as many group shows, including frequent showings at the Marin Museum of Contemporary Art.
